Creative Writing Club is an inclusive space for young writers to experiment with creative writing. We will explore poetry, storytelling, creative nonfiction, nature journaling, and more!

Writers greatly benefit from being part of a writing community. In this program, young writers will not only receive high quality writing instruction, but will learn from their peers by giving and receiving feedback. I facilitate a safe community in which writers are encouraged, celebrated and supported. Because writers are more motivated when writing is relevant to them, there is room for choice in topics. Group size is kept small to ensure writers receive individual feedback each meeting.

Families are invited to an author share during our last meeting. Each writer will share their writing in a way that feels comfortable for them, whether reading aloud, providing copies for the audience to read themselves, or in some other way determined by the writer.

"Don't be afraid to live like a writer. Writers explore. There are two whole universes for you to explore--the one on the inside, and the physical one on the outside. Take your choice: inner or outer. Or best: both." —-~Ralph Fletcher

Each week we will work on these goals:

GOAL 1: Understand the purposes of writing.

Why: Having a purpose increases motivation and engagement.

GOAL 2: Adopt a writer's mindset and habits.

Why: Understanding and implementing how real writers operate leads to

successful writing experiences.

GOAL 3: Use mentor texts to plan, organize, draft, and revise effective pieces.

Why: Writers learn best from other writers and good examples of writing.

GOAL 4: Give and receive feedback.

Why: Real-world writers write within a community of other writers.

GOAL 5: Incorporate creativity.

Why: Each writer has a unique voice to share with the world.

What families have to say about Thriving Minds writing programs:

“My son greatly benefitted from Abby's class. She created a great environment where he felt comfortable to experiment and ask questions and enjoyed the other kids in his class. Abby outlined what would take place in the class and responded promptly to any inquiry I made to her. I felt that she genuinely cared for him and was interested in his growth as a writer. Thanks Abby for your hard work!” ~B.C., parent

“My daughter really liked her class in terms of strategies and diverse ideas in writing skills. She also got very exciting experience in making a podcast. She felt more confidence and got interested in writing. I believe she can make continuous efforts in building her writing skills.” ~Y.S., parent

“Thank you so much, Abigail, for this one-year writing lesson. You are an awesome writing teacher and greatly helpful with my daughter’s writing skills.  At the beginning of classes, she was struggling and now has much more confidence with writing. She really likes you and enjoyed your writing lessons. If in the future we decide to sign up for additional writing lessons, you will be on the top of the list.” ~J.M., parent
